Cryptography and Why It Is Indispensable for Our Freedom

by Alien Investor

Cryptography in Everyday Life

Cryptography sounds like rocket science โ€” but it has long been everywhere in daily life.

Every time you visit a website over "https", use Signal, or send Bitcoin, there's mathematics running in the background ensuring that nobody can secretly eavesdrop or tamper with your data.

Symmetric and Asymmetric Cryptography

There are two major domains: symmetric and asymmetric cryptography.

With symmetric schemes, both sides encrypt and decrypt using the same secret key โ€” fast and efficient, but there's a catch: how do you securely exchange that key in the first place?

Asymmetric Cryptography ๐Ÿ”“

Asymmetric cryptography solves this by using a key pair: a public key that anyone can see, and a private key that should never leave your device.

With this you can encrypt messages, verify signatures โ€” or unambiguously assign Bitcoin transactions to an address.

Cryptography and Power ๐Ÿšซ

Things get interesting where cryptography meets power. States, banks, and corporations would love access to everything โ€” "for your security", of course.

Cryptography as a Tool for Self-Determination

Strong encryption turns the tables: suddenly the individual can effectively protect their data, money, and communications from outside access.

That's exactly why cryptography is not just technology โ€” it's a tool for self-determination. Whoever controls their keys controls their assets, whether that's messages, documents, or private keys for Bitcoin.
