What Are Registered Shares – and Why I Love Switzerland

Many people think they own shares. In reality, they often own nothing more than a promise of ownership. And that promise is worthless when it actually matters.

In the US (and across the EU) shares are typically pooled at Cede & Co. or other custodians. You hold a beneficial interest, but you are not the legal owner.

The actual owner is an intermediary. You are just a line item in a system that guarantees you nothing.

ETFs, Neo-Brokers & App Promises

Whether it's an ETF, Trade Republic or a bank custody account: you are never entered in the share register. You have no voting rights, no right to direct communication with the company, no security in a crisis. Just a tap in an app.

🇨🇭 Swiss Registered Shares: REAL Ownership

In Switzerland there are registered shares (Namensaktien), where you are actually entered into the share register of the respective company.

• You are the legal owner of the share
• You receive an invitation to the annual general meeting
• You have voting rights, inspection rights – genuine control
• You can communicate directly with the company

🇩🇪 Also Possible in Germany – But…

Yes – many German companies also maintain a name register you can be entered in. But I have deliberately chosen the Swiss legal framework – as far removed as possible from the overreaching EU.

Finfluencers, Crash Prophets & Bank Advisors?

They profit from you not understanding what you actually own. They sell products – not ownership. They tell you that safety lies in funds, ETFs and insurance policies. But the control is never yours.

Conclusion

Real investors don't just buy price exposure. They buy ownership. Everything else is an illusion. Switzerland is one of the last places where you can still get it.
